1. Presentations September 2013 - Preparation.

PRESENTATIONS SEPTEMBER 2013.

At the end of May, after completing our second year we attended a meeting at University with our tutors; Andy, Tim and theory lecturer and course leader, Pauline. They wanted to take this opportunity to have a quick discussion with us about our Major Photography Projectwhich we will have to start thinking about as soon as we start back in September 2013. We also have to produce a short presentation which we will have to show to our lecturers in the first two weeks back at University.

Presentations Sept. 2013

  • They will be no more than five to ten minutes in length.
  • 10 SLIDES - Consisting of ten things which have inspired you during research and also influenced how your work may have developed over the years.
  • Round off by giving some idea of the area of study you wish to pursue over your project.
Obviously, these presentations are only a starting point and not a definite statement of intent in anyway, as it will be refined with consultation from the lecturers, or any relevant mentor.

Our lecturers also highlighted that it would be very useful to have some preparation for the Major Project, therefore I created a Summer Work Book which I'd filled with various things I'd done over my weeks off.

Here are the notes we received  in the meeting:-

"Area of Interest -

The most important point with regard to your final major project is that you target it to an area or areas that you have genuine interest in and ones that will easily sustain you for a lengthy period of time.

Over the last two years you have been exposed to a wide variety of genres within the medium and some will have inspired you and pushed your photographic skills and knowledge whilst others will have been a struggle and questioned your involvement in them.

Below is a list of possible areas that you could work within next year. It is not exhaustive, however, and there may be other areas you want to work within. This list is simply a starting point for you to think about were your interests lie.

This summer is a time when you can put in some serious research into your proposed area and to clearly formulate ideas and strategies that will aid you on your return to university in the next academic year.

In light of this on your immediate return to university in the Autumn of 2013 you will be required to present your thoughts and elements of your research to staff and students. This will help the course team to determine who will mentor you through the major project module and to clarify to yourselves the way forward during your last year of university."

Throughout the year, some of our lecturers have emailed us letting us know of any opportunities which might be of use to us. Now that our University has become part of University of South Wales we have a wider range of opportunities which might be of use to us. These include: Various Local Exhibitions, talks from any photographers, Opportunities to work with other from different subjects.

Our lecturers have suggested some genres of photography which might be of use to consider for our Major Project:
Documentary
Natural History
Landscape
Architectural
Self Reflection/ Phototherapy
Construction of Form
Commercial/Editorial
Fashion
Political
Constructed Image/ Manipulation
Moving Image/ Installation
Conceptual/ Art Photography

Now obviously, there should be aspects from everything we've done so far, that stand out to me, things that I am very much interested in and that I might have explored in previous modules and projects.
One thing, which I have noticed to be a recurring pattern and always something I research in a number of my projects for various modules is the work of the NEW TOPOGRAPHICS. I think I do have a strong interest in the mixture of Architecture and Documentary, I am always very interested in creating projects on documenting similar features of various buildings etc.
Even though I do have a strong interest in the work of the New Topographics, I do also have an interest in Wildlife and Landscape photography, even though I do not feel I've managed to explore these genres very well in my previous projects, as I didn't think they'd be suitable.

Now might be a great chance in exploring these aspects of photography.
